    Grasmere results shared and compared

All areas continue to indicate that Grasmere pupils are achieving well in excess of national levels and also make good value added progress in the school.

    We would like to welcome Joanne Murphy to out teaching staff. Joanne is an experiences Early Years practitioner who has particular interests in drama and art.

    Unfortunately Karlie will be leaving us as she will be working at the BBC in a new exciting job developing teaching resources and leading film making workshops with children visiting the Twenty First Century Classroom there. We would like to thank Karlie for everything she has done at Grasmere and wish her all the best for the future.

    Paul and Nadine will be leading PPA sessions on Monday and Tuesdays for Music and Design and technology/Art activities and Lorena and Mark P will continue developing Spanish and drama for children also.


    Year 2 and 6 SATS Results

    We have now had the full return of all Hackney Primary Schools SATs results and data about national comparisons. We should be very proud of the value added performance of pupils at Grasmere Primary School and the hard work and contribution children, families and school staff are making to enable children to enjoy such success. Here is some of the key successes of the school:

    • All KS1 (Year 2) Level 2 and 3 scores are higher than Hackney and National Levels
    • All KS2 (Year 6) Level 4 and 5 results are higher than Hackney and National averages
    • Highest Level 2+ reading scores of all Hackney schools for Year 2 pupils
    • Highest Level 3 scores of all Hackney schools for Year 2 pupils
    • Highest Level 4+ Science scores of all Hackney schools for Year 6 pupils
    • Highest Level 5 English scores of all Hackney schools for Year 6 pupils (double national levels and 3 times Hackney levels)
    • Highest Level 5 Science scores of all Hackney schools for Year 6 pupils (over 2 _ times higher than Hackney averages and 1 _ times higher than national levels)

    Language of the Half Term

    Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

    From January 2008 we will be focussing upon a language of the half term in assemblies, classes and displays, learning key words and phrases which children can use regularly. Languages studied will relate to the diversity of the 25 languages spoken within school. Each half term another language will be focussed upon following the same format of words and phrases learned, as well as an understanding of where languages come from and how they have influenced society.

    Next half-term’s language will be Makaton which is a system of communication using sign to support speech and graphic symbols to support the written word and is used in over 40 countries.

    Family Learning Afternoon

    We will be holding our termly Family Learning afternoon on Thursday 4th October from 1.30 to 3.30pm. Our theme will be Mathematics Problem Solving.

    Children will take part in a range of different practical activities developing their mathematics skills, working with different teachers. Parents and carers are welcome to attend to find out more how maths is developed in the school and join in the activities throughout the school.

    SEAL Theme & Brain Gym Exercise of the Week

    Children Take part in a weekly lesson supporting Citizenship and Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning, with whole school themes also supported in Monday assemblies. You may like to discuss with your child about what they have learned. Next week’s theme is: New Beginnings.

    Children participate in a range of Brain Gym exercises which are designed to help support concentration and re-invigorate children. Each week we revisit or learn a new exercise. You may wish to practice this with your child. Next week’s exercise is Foot Flex which supports Reading Comprehension.

    Meet The Teacher

    We will be holding a Meet The Teacher session on Friday 28 September from 9.30 – 10.00 and 10.00 to 10.30.

    There will be the opportunity to meet with your child’s new teacher, support staff and discuss curriculum coverage and key information. Copies of information handed out will be distributed to all families and available on the school web site.

    Summer Clubs at Grasmere

    The following clubs will be operating this term at Grasmere on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Children make 9 choices at the beginning of the year and are given 6 of these, one each half term.

    Infants:

    Cooking, Football, Craft, Costume Making, Gymnastics, Recorders, ICT, PE & Games.

    Juniors:

    Art, Sewing, Ways With Wool, Athletics, Recorders, Football, Board Games, Italian, Spanish, Basketball, Cricket and Drama.

    Nursery Closure

    Due to home visits being conducted for new children joining school, the Nursery will be closed on Wednesday 3rd January 2007. It will reopen on Thursday 4th January.

    Black History Month Quiz

    Your child will be bringing home shortly as part of their homework a British Black Achiever’s quiz. The quiz is intended to be a shared learning opportunity for children to work together or with older family members to raise their awareness of the contribution Britain’s Black community has made over the centuries to our culture.

    Please return the quizzes to school by Monday 30th October. One prize per class will be awarded in the Black History assembly on Tuesday 31st October.

    Parent Consultation Meetings

    Meetings with parents to discuss social and academic progress, and receive your child’s annual report.

    • Thurs 6th July AM: Reception, Year 6
    • Thursday 6th July PM: Years 3 & 5
    • Thursday 6th July Evening: (all classes except Year 1)
    • Friday 7th July AM: Years 1 & 4
    • Friday 7th July PM: Nursery & Year 2
    • Wednesday 12th July Evening: Year 1

    Appointment letters will be sent home in the fortnight before consultations. We will also be providing sessions in school during the consultations where parents and carers can learn how to support their children’s reading and writing at home. Sessions will be done in English and Turkish.

    National Curriculum Testing dates and schedule published

    At Grasmere we constantly assess the progress made by children. As far as humanly possible we try to incorporate this into class activities, rather than making children complete formal tests.

    Schools in England and Wales are required to formally assess Year 2 and 6 pupils at the end of Key Stage 1 and 2, which is used to measure school achievement annually and track pupils progress by the DfES.

    Science Week

    Monday, March 13th, 2006

    The week beginning Monday 20th March will be Science Week at Grasmere. Children will be involved in a range of activities, trips and homework relating to science.

    On the afternoon of Thursday 23rd March we will be holding a special afternoon of practical activities with children having the opportunity to work with different members of staff. Parents are invited to attend to find out more about how science is delivered within the school.

    We will also be holding our Balloon Race on the same day, which FROGS will be arranging.
